Review/plot:
If i had to guess why John Byrne would agree to draw someone else's story, and a story about Sunspot at that, my guess would be that he was trying out the duoshade technique that he used on Namor. This story was published after that technique debuted in Namor, but it seems like there was a long lag time before the stories intended for Marvel Comics Presents also got published. Per Bill and Vincent in the comments, Byrne did this as a favor for editor Terry Kavanagh, so maybe my guess is wrong, but Byrne definitely makes use of duoshade in his art.

This story starts with Sunspot already in Brazil and having helped rescue a woman named Christina Aguilar from a falling tree. She's lost her wedding ring, though.

The Aguilar home is then invaded by punks that want to beat up Sunspot for being a mutant. And he's exhausted his solar energy and can't transform into his super-strong form.

The leader of the guys beating up turns out to have Christina's ring. When Sunspot figures out that it was them that dropped the tree on him and Christina, it makes him angry enough to power up anyway. So he beats everyone up and Christina gets her ring back. Then Sunspot wanders off, sad that he's a mutant that will be hounded forever and will never have a loving family like Christina.

I feel like i'm missing a page or something. I don't know who Christina is or why Sunspot is all alone in Brazil, or why he's wandering from town to town like David Banner on the Hulk television show.

Chronological Placement Considerations: Since i'm at a loss about this story, i'll just follow the MCP and place it before New Mutants Summer Special #1.

John Byrne was asked on his site why he drew this story and he said he did it as a favor. Mystery solved :)

Yes, a favor to Terry Kavanagh (also his Namor editor) if I remember correctly.

He felt that this is one of his best art jobs, since he had no emotional investment whatsoever in the characters, so for him it was all about stretching his artistic muscles....I must say that this is probably his best use of Duo-Shade ever.
