Marvel Fanfare #15

Issue(s): Marvel Fanfare #15
Cover Date: Jul 84
Title: "That night... / Crimson Ash"
Credits:
Barry Windsor-Smith / Roger McKenzie - Writer
Barry Windsor-Smith / Jack Sparling - Penciler
Barry Windsor-Smith / Ian Akin & Brian Garvey - Inker

Review/plot:
A special treat - Barry Windsor-Smith provides a nice down-time issue of Marvel Fanfare with the Thing and Human Torch playing complicated pranks on each other. Simple, but fun.

(That's a cigar loaded with fireworks that Ben is about to light at the end there.)

There's also a forgettable Daredevil back-up featuring a pyromaniac that Matt Murdock knew as a kid.

This is a rare case where the main story isn't an inventory piece. The lettercol is full of people writing in with their opinions on whether inventory stories are acceptable or not (a surprising number are fine with it). A response makes it clear that just because something is inventory doesn't mean that there's no work involved in publishing it; some are just plotted, some just have pencils, etc.

(Ignoring the back-up when considering the Quality Rating).

Quality Rating: A

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Just needs to take place in any downtime for the FF before Secret Wars.

Jack Sparling had been in comics for quite a while at this point, mainly for DC, Warren, Dell/Gold Key, Charlton, ACG and others. Strangely enough, his superhero comics efforts tended to appear right at or near the cancellation, giving him kind of a "kiss of death" reputation(though not at his comparatively few Marvel efforts).

I'm surprised you left out the "twist" in the Thing story: Johnny was playing a series of April Fools Day pranks on Ben, but dumb Johhny forgot how many days are in March, so he was a day early, adding insult to injury. I thought that was pretty funny
