Review/plot:
In issue #54, which was running the third part of a Black Knight storyline, Al Milgrom half-jokes that to balance out the lack of commercial appeal of that, he's running a Wolverine story. The story, entirely by Richard Howell (even lettering and coloring), is no critical achievement, but it did allow Milgrom to put Wolverine's picture in the corner box on the front cover and this horrific image on the back.

Inside, we have a giant-eared Wolverine attacked by some goofballs.

They manage to stab him and take him to their boss.

Meanwhile, some campers are also captured by the same boss, who is a mad scientist intent on ruling the world with an army of Hippo- and Moose-Men.

And now that he's captured a half-man, half-wolverine, he's sure to succeed.

The campers recognizes Wolverine.

Wolverine literally (and explicitly) tries the same trick twice, pretending to pass out, escaping and getting captured, and then pretending to pass out again...

...and escaping again.

This time he has to fight increasingly weird man-animal hybrids...

...and dodge the scientist's Jab-Bombers.

When freed, the scientific abominations make the decision to kill themselves with gas. Wolverine then frees the campers, but doesn't accept their compliment of being "just as human as us".

File this under The Overexposure of Wolverine. But give it some points for the Moose Man.

Quality Rating: D

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: This story is completely context free. The MCP have this closer to publication date, in a random gap between Wolverine's various solo and X-Men appearances. But since i've already covered the Black Knight and Power Pack features that ran in these issues and at the time that i'm writing this i haven't gotten to 1990-1991 yet, i'm placing this in a different random gap in Wolverine's appearances, a little earlier than publication date.
