Issue(s): Marvel Fanfare #8
Cover Date: May 83
Title: "The light that never was!"
Credits:
Peter Gillis - Writer
Carmine Infantino - Penciler
P. Craig Russell - Inker

Review/plot:
Dr. Strange and Clea deal with a low level mage named James Mandarin and his artist girlfriend who get themselves mixed up with the Night Crawler/Dark Crawler creature that Strange and the Hulk encountered in the Dark Dimension in the lead-up to the formation of the Defenders.

Dr. Strange seems to have been a favorite character for Marvel Fanfare artists.

The back-up story is part of a Gil Kane/P. Craig Russell adaptation of the Jungle Book, which is much nicer than most of the stuff that winds up in Fanfare, but it's not part of Marvel Universe continuity so it's of no concern to us. Which is too bad:

Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: A footnote says that this takes place before Clea leaves for her own dimension in Dr. Strange #53. Otherwise, it's context free.

References:

  • Dr. Strange rejected James Mandarin as a pupil in Doctor Strange #15.
  • The Night Crawler previously appeared in Hulk #126.
  • We'll see a resolution to the James Mandarin situation in Dr. Strange #57.

Well... who says Jungle Book isn't part of Marvel Universe continuity? :) Doc Savage is. Fu Man Chu is. 2001 is.
I mean, if it's a good story... It's a shame to have to exile it from the Project. Especially if it helps raise the overall quality of the MU. Something'special got to offset Team America.
