Marvel Spotlight #8

Issue(s): Marvel Spotlight #8
Cover Date: Sep 80
Title: "Planet where time stood still!"
Credits:
Mike Barr - Script
Mike Barr & Dick Riley - Plot
Frank Miller - Penciler
Bruce D. Patterson - Inker

Review/plot:
At one point i had a perception that Captain Marvel was written and drawn by Jim Starlin and then the series was canceled and later Starlin made the Death of Captain Marvel graphic novel. But the truth is, Mar-vell's series went on for a while, and even now he's back, hogging the pages of Marvel Spotlight again, preventing said spotlight from providing any exposure to any other characters that might generate a little interest. He's even being drawn (quite well!) by Frank Miller.

The story is science fiction fable with a moral at the end.

Not bad, not great. Miller's art is nice; it's actually got some Starlin attributes and it's unusual to see Miller doing a sci-fi story.

Dick Riley? Unknown to me.

Captain Mar-Vell's last story before Marvel Graphic Novel #1 was supposed to be in the never-published Marvel Spotlight #12, by Peter Gillis(and, unusually, rewritten by D. Hands, a pseudonym normally used for art), Mike Nasser, and Bruce Patterson. The story was completed but I have no idea if it ever got published.

Mark, as far as I can tell, this is Riley's only credit. As fnord notes, the unpublished SPOTLIGHT #12 story finally appeared in (aptly) MARVEL SUPER-HEROES Vol. 2 #3 (Fall 1990), but Nasser only drew the unused cover; the interior art was by Jerry Bingham.
