Marvel Team-Up #120

Issue(s): Marvel Team-Up #120
Cover Date: Aug 82
Title: "Old soldiers"
Credits:
J.M. DeMatteis - Writer
Kerry Gammill - Penciler
Mike Esposito - Inker
Tom DeFalco - Editor

Review/plot:
Seanbaby summarized this issue succinctly: "In that mess, Turner [D. Century] made a horn that killed people under 65, but it didn't work and Spider-Man punched him."

And we could safely leave it there...

...but then you would never see the phrase "New York -- prepare to be honked as you've never been honked --- before".

And this is a Team-Up book, so we should check in with our guest star, especially since it's Dominic Fortune, not exactly a regular in the Modern age. I actually bought Marvel Premiere #56 for inclusion in this project but discovered that the entire issue takes place prior to Marvel Comics #1 and is therefore out of scope here, and that's true of all his previous appearances as well. This is his first modern appearance, and it starts with him in a retirement home. Apparently all his days as a mercenary didn't do much for him because it's the same retirement home that Aunt May is in.

When he notices Turner D. Century...

...he gets back in his old costume...

...and since he's old, Century even offers him a ride on his bike.

Beyond that, Fortune's main contribution to the story is nearly having a heart attack.

He does make it through, however, and in the end he decides to track down his old girlfriend Sabbath.

Quality Rating: C-

Historical Significance Rating: 2 - first Dominic Fortune in Modern age

Chronological Placement Considerations: I'm out of sync with the MCP on Marvel Team-Up thanks to my placement of issues #117-118 and #124, but Spider-Man's appearance is context free. Also note that last issue, #119, is deliberately placed before #117-118. Aunt May does reference Nate Lubenski's wandering off to Times Square last issue, but she doesn't say how long ago it happened.

References:

  • Turner D. Century previously appeared in Spider-Woman #33. And Dominic Fortune had a file on the incident.
