Review/plot:
Now here's a Super-Villain Team-Up. Blizzard and Electro join forces to take over the Daily Bugle and shake it down for its payroll cash. Spider-Man gets involved when Peter Parker goes to the Bugle for his paycheck...

...and Daredevil finds Blizzard trying to stop shipments of the morning Daily Bugle. Blizzard gets away but Daredevil notices something odd about the paper's headline.

Also ensnared in the villains' plot is Barney Bushkin, editor of the Bugle's rival paper, the Daily Globe.

Since Spider-Man is already at the Bugle, you might think that he'd get involved first, but he gets so enraptured in the villains' exposition that he hangs on the wall listening for six pages. During that time we learn that Electro and Blizzard got together when Electro made a prison break, and, "in an astonishing coincidence", in the process his electricity powers got transferred from his makeshift suit to his person.

That's a pretty big development, although for a relatively minor character. And next time we see him we'll find that Justin Hammer has enhanced his technology, so maybe the power transfer didn't stick.

We also find out what was up with that headline.

Finally, Daredevil arrives...

...and Peter still spends several panels hanging on the wall, watching.

By the time he finally gets fully into costume, the villains have escaped and Spidey has ruined DD's pursuit.

From here on out we're into standard Team-Up territory, although it's enhanced with hijinx from the editors.

The fight ends when Spider-Man tricks Electro into zapping Blizzard, the result of which is the Blizzard steaming up and then icing over.

Quality Rating: C

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: The MCP place this between Amazing Spider-Man #170-171 and Daredevil #144-145.

References:

  • Blizzard bills himself as "the man who nearly killed Iron Man", referring to Iron Man #86-87.
  • Barney Bushkin was previously seen in Amazing Spider-Man #27 and Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #22.
  • No footnote but Electro mentions that Spider-Man and Daredevil were the first two heroes to defeat him. That was in Amazing Spider-Man #9 and Daredevil #2, respectively.

Electro in the basement:that's got to be one of the worst saliva-filled garage-door mouths Buscema's ever done.

Love how Peter keeps to the shadows while clinging to the ceiling without his mask-- right in front of a glass door with a transom window! Changes into his costume right next to the transom window-- might as well do a complete costume reveal before putting his mask on while we're at it... of course I guess his spider-sense was protecting him from all the many peeping eyes in a busy newspaper office building...[/facepalm]
