Marvel Team-Up #75

Issue(s): Marvel Team-Up #75
Cover Date: Nov 78
Title: "The smoke of that great burning!"
Credits:
Chris Claremont - Plot
Ralph Macchio - Script
John Byrne - Penciler
Alan Gordon - Inker

Review/plot:
This is a "firemen are the real heroes" issue.

It's done well, has nice art by John Byrne, and even Macchio's scripting is fine.

And it starts with Peter and MJ bumping into Luke Cage and Harmony Young at a disco, and that can never be a bad thing.

Quality Rating: B-

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: The MCP places this between Amazing Spider-Man #186-187 and Power Man and Iron Fist #53-54. Peter has a thought bubble saying that since he and MJ are officially split up, he wasn't going to pass up an opportunity for a date, even if it was to a disco.

References:

  • Regarding the Peter/MJ spit up, "See current issues of Spectacular and Amazing Spider-Man to find out what Pete means".
  • Spider-Man and Power Man fought previously in Amazing Spider-Man #123
  • Caught in an explosion, Power Man thinks that the only thing that ever sent him flying worse than that was when he was punched by Iron Fist in Power Man #48 (incorrectly listed as Power Man #46).

Pete can't boogie?!?

Spidey would burn the roof off of that discotheque!

Based on the dates, this is the same month as the Hypno-Hustler...maybe this was just this whole "anti-disco" thing going on at the time. (though seriously, I still see the Hypno-Hustler as an advocator of FUNK considering the reference)

Really cool tribute, more poignant after 9/11/01, no doubt.

OK, I just noticed it: Spidey and Mary Jane go to a disco in this issue...in the same month as the Hypno-Hustler issue in Spectacular. Eh...guess he wanted to avoid Luke Cage knowing he didn't have any "sweet Christmas" beats.

This will be obvious enough to many people nowadays, but for the sake of posteriors, someone should probably at least mention that "Studio 13" is a transparent reference to the infamous Manhattan nightclub Studio 54 which opened in 1977 or 1978.
