Marvel Two-In-One #18

Issue(s): Marvel Two-In-One #18
Cover Date: Aug 76
Title: "Dark, dark demon-night!"
Credits:
Bill Mantlo & Scott Edelman - Plot
Bill Mantlo - Script
Ron Wilson - Penciler
Jim Mooney & Dan Adkins - Inker

Review/plot:
This is the third and final appearance of this Scarecrow for a long time. I mentioned in his last appearance that Scott Edelman was sending out postcards to people asking them to pick up this issue if they wanted to see more appearances of the character, but that didn't seem to work. Whether that was due to an actual lack of interest in the character, or just scheduling problems in Marvel Two-In-One, i don't know, although we are definitely past the heyday of Marvel's horror phase. It's worth noting that Edelman didn't fully write this issue, with Bill Mantlo getting "story" (which i'm interpreting as "script") and even first billing on the co-plotting credits.

It turns out that Harmony Maxwell and Jess Duncan know Alicia Masters, so they invite her and the Thing to a gallery opening so they can bend the Thing's ear about the Scarecrow.

The Thing doesn't really believe any of it, but then Kalumai turns a party goer into a fiery demon (that's not the Human Torch on the cover), and the Scarecrow shows up to fight him.

And the Thing helps out.

Among the Scarecrow's powers is the ability to summon rain.

The demon is eventually defeated and turned back into a normal man, but the Scarecrow's painting is destroyed, and Jess's brother Dave (referred to as Dave Monroe in this story) is missing.

Despite the cliffhanger-ish ending, this is the end of the story.

Quality Rating: C-

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Continuing to place Marvel Two-In-One stories before Fantastic Four #166, which begins an arc where Ben Grimm is no longer the Thing.

References:

  • The Scarecrow previously appeared in Dead of Night #11 and Marvel Spotlight #26.
  • Even though the Thing has a hard time believing what Harmony and Jess tell him about the Scarecrow, his experience with the Son of Satan in Marvel Two-In-One #14 leaves him somewhat more open to the possibility that it's true.

Comments

In the horror essential #2, they have an article with the guys who made the Scarecrow. They basically admit that they have no fricken plan in mind and offer ten different silly origins for him.

Amazing you could get away with that nonsense in those days.
