Marvel Two-In-One #19

Issue(s): Marvel Two-In-One #19
Cover Date: Sep 76
Title: "Claws of the Cougar!"
Credits:
Tony Isabella - Plot
Bill Mantlo - Script
Sal Buscema - Penciler
Don Heck - Inker

Review/plot:
This issue is about the Cougar, a middle-aged female cat woman that seduces younger male super-heroes. Here she is sneaking into the Thing's bedroom for some midnight action.

Ok, that's really Tigra, and the Cougar in this story is really a dude, but i figured i ought to get that joke out of the way.

The Cougar is actually one of the Cat People, like Joanne Tumolo, the scientist that gave Greer Nelson her cat powers, and Tigra has been sent by the Cat People to stop him because he's a renegade. He's acquired the Null-Bands that were once used to power the living totem pole known as Tomazooma.

The Cougar had been disguised in human form and was romancing a female factory owner to get the technology he needed for his big scheme, but it turns out that she actually knew what he was and was using him, hoping that his Cat Person genius would revitalize her failing business, and in the end she has a change of heart.

Art is not looking so great this issue, which i attribute to Don Heck being on inks.

Quality Rating: C-

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Takes place before the Thing becomes Ben Grimm in Fantastic Four #168. Tigra sees Ben sleeping in his bed as the Thing, so it's likely he's not wearing the replacement exoskeleton Thing suit. Takes place between issues Marvel Chillers #4-5.

References:

  • A little montage of Tigra's origin includes scenes from Cat #1 and Giant-Size Creatures #1.
  • Tomazooma appeared in Fantastic Four #80. There was no mention of Null-Bands in that story.

Comments

Come on, you know Marvel is missing out in not have a Cougar were-woman. Easily could be a Tigra enemy and take all that "sexual angst" they poured on Greer in the 80s.

The end of this issue states that the story in #20 actually begins in "Giant-Size Two-In-One #1", which is weird because Fantastic Four Annual #11--which came out more than 2 months before #19--correctly referred to that book as Marvel Two-In-One Annual #1.
