Marvel Two-In-One #80

Issue(s): Marvel Two-In-One #80
Cover Date: Oct 81
Title: "Call him... monster!"
Credits:
Tom DeFalco - Writer
Ron Wilson - Penciler
Chic Stone - Inker

Review/plot:
This one starts off really crazy. Reed has designed an insane exercise machine for the Thing where a heavy block of wall repeatedly slams into him. It shakes the whole building, destroying all of Alicia's sculptures. She wanders into the exercise room, which doesn't even have a door, to figure out what's going on, and is nearly killed. Nice lack of safety precautions with a blind lady in the building!

Then the Thing runs into the Ghost Rider, who's become a lot more demonic and unhinged since the last time they met.

Despite clearly being a danger to himself and others...

...the Thing helps GR get out of town.

I like how there's been a seemingly coordinated effort in books where Ghost Rider has guest appeared - Marvel Team-Up #91, Defenders #96, here, and soon Avengers #214 - to emphasize the fact that he's become more of a demonic character.

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Ghost Rider's appearance in New York this issue doesn't fit into any logical trajectory from his solo book, so i've just let it fall at publication date. I figure Johnny Blaze gets around.

Comments

This issue reads like a callback to MTIO #1, when Ben met Man-Thing/Ted Sallis and they went up against the Molecule Man, and where Ben realizes that whatever problems his rocky form might cause, there's always someone in worse circumstances. "There but for the grace of God" indeed.
