Marvel Two-In-One #98

Issue(s): Marvel Two-In-One #98
Cover Date: Apr 83
Title: "Vid wars!"
Credits:
David Michelinie - Writer
Ron Wilson - Penciler
Frank Giacoia - Inker
Tom DeFalco - Editor

Review/plot:
This is a weird one. The Thing and Franklin Richards get drawn into a world based on a video game that is similar to Pac-Man.

Other than being an odd attempt to capitalize on Pacmania, it doesn't seem to have much of a point, and it isn't a great story.

Quality Rating: C-

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: The MCP places this between Fantastic Four #250-251, and after Marvel Team-Up annual #5, although it's really context free. What is important is that Marvel Two-In-One #96 and beyond take place after Marvel Two-In-One annual #7, and that issue has a number of dependencies due to all the guest stars.

References:

  • The Thing likens his experience in the video game world to the time he went to a carnival with Alicia and Giant-Man in Marvel Two-In-One #76. It's a really irrelevant reference, almost like they felt they needed to get at least one footnote in the issue, even if it made no sense.

Crossover: N/A

Comments

John Byrne's cover to this is his first contribution to solo Thing stories.

Considering that weird "Pixels" movie coming out soon, this one actually has a bit more relevance again...well tangentially.

This was the only issue of two in one I got in realtime. I liked the Thing but I had no idea the "two in one" meant it was a team-up book as I didnt realise Franklin was the guest star.
