Issue(s): Master of Kung Fu #23

Title: "River of death"
Credits:
Doug Moench - Writer

Review/plot:
Ka-Zar just faced a River of Doom, but Shang-Chi is up against a River of Death.

Sir Denis Smith, along with Shang-Chi and Blackjack Tarr, attempt to disrupt an alliance between Fu Manchu and a former Nazi that has fled to South America. They fight Fu Manchu's henchmen along the Amazon River, only to find that the henchmen were a distraction and Fu Manchu was actually traveling by helicopter.

It also turns out that the guide Smith hired to get them to the Nazi's hideout was actually the Nazi himself.

Shang-Chi is seemingly killed.

These stories are not bad at all.

Quality Rating: B-

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: The story continues directly next issue, but there's a small time gap in between where the characters continue to travel up the Amazon, so the issues don't have to be placed directly next to each other.

References:

  • Blackjack Tarr doesn't completely trust Shang-Chi and they nearly comes to blows at the beginning of this issue. Shang-Chi and Blackjack fought previously in Master of Kung Fu #17.
