Ms. Marvel #23

Issue(s): Ms. Marvel #23
Cover Date: Apr 79
Title: "The woman who fell to Earth"
Credits:
Chris Claremont - Writer
Mike Vosburg - Penciler
Bruce D. Patterson - Inker

Review/plot:
Carol's astronaut friend's death in Ms. Marvel #13 was handled very poorly, lost in the shuffle of a lot of other plot elements as Claremont was coming to grips with the book. Lesser men may just regard that as a missed opportunity, but Chris Claremont brings the lady back from the dead so Carol can talk to her and get another chance to save her life...

...this time from the Faceless One, on the Guardian of the Galaxy's Drydock.

Major Victory co-stars...

...but the other Guardians are off checking out the Collector's space ship in the aftermath of the Korvac saga (it's been a while, but i'm sure the Collector's ship is full of cool stuff and they wanted to take their time).

I'm a fan of the Faceless One, a really minor villain who's just a sphere with legs, but this is his last appearance.

Ms. Marvel is canceled with this issue, with two unfinished plots eventually being completed in 1992 back-up stories in Marvel Super-Heroes.

Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: The Guardians are currently checking out the Collector's ship, as shown in Avengers #181.

References:

  • Carol's astronaut friend died during her battle with the Elementals in Ms. Marvel #11-12.
  • A footnote says Faceless One was last seen in Astonishing Tales #2, but he actually subsequently appeared in Hero For Hire #8-9 The Faceless One's dialogue also ignores his Hero For Hire appearance.
  • The Guardians of the Galaxy came to this time period in Avengers #167.
  • Ms. Marvel's Seventh Sense gives her a flashback of the Drydock being destroyed, which actually happened but was re-created by Korvac in Avengers #177.

Comments

I'm guessing the lady astronaut's costume in the Faceless One's first panel there was originally showing a lot more skin, but got covered up by the colorist.

The title refers to the 1976 film "The Man Who Fell To Earth".

In FOOM#21, Claremont announced that Carol Danvers would become a freelance SF writer(which he used to be himself).
