Review/plot:
Namor arrives in New York harbor on a giant floating glacier, which happens to be full of metal-melting Vibranium.

He goes to Phoebe Marrs at Oracle, accusing her of being secretly behind Leon MacKenzie's expedition. But when she protests, he realizes that it must have been Llyra (which it was). He then allows Phoebe to go forward with the sale of the Vibranium that he found, not realizing that the buyer is Roxxon.

Meanwhile, Llyra is with the person who looks like Lady Dorma but claims that s/he is Vyrra. It turns out that it really is Vyrra. His cloning work was all being done around Dorma, so it was a Dorma body that he transferred his mind into to avoid being punished by Namor for illegal work. Vyrra is now helping Llyra deliver her baby, using "force-growing" to accelerate the pregnancy and the boy's development. He also convinces her that a newborn baby's mind in a full-grown body is of no use, so she agrees to transfer her own mind to the kid.

Namor goes to the repurposed Hydrobase, now an undersea facility called Hydropolis (previously called Aquaria), only to learn that Roxxon has bought a piece of that, too. Namor is particularly upset to see that this guy is in charge (i don't know who he is)(but i do know that the opening line in this scene is a riff from Monty Python's Meaning of Life).

Diane Arliss doesn't want Namor tearing up Hydropolis. Her husband Stingray is still recovering from when Namor broke his ribs, so she puts on the Stingray costume to stop him.

Diane shames Namor.

By now, Llyra's baby has been accelerated to the age of sixteen.

As Vyrra says, a very healthy sixteen year old.

Vyrra requested some minor tribute be made to him once Llyra used her son to claim Atlantis - basically he wanted a statue - and that was apparently too much for Llyra, so she kills him and smashes the tube holding his original body.

She then takes her son, who she names Llyron (after her father), to lay claim to the throne of Atlantis.

The Atlanteans are said to be on the verge of civil war due to lack of leadership from the Council of Three who are currently in charge, so Llyra comes while the time is ripe.

Vyrra and her son are spotted by Tiger Shark's lacky, Remora.

Quality Rating: C

Historical Significance Rating: 3 - first Llyron

Chronological Placement Considerations: The beginning of next issue seemingly begins soon after the end here, with Warlord Seth - who is at the gate of Atlantis where Llyra has brought Llyron - running inside the Atlantean Senate to tell the Council of Three that Llyra had been "apprehended" only "moments ago". And Tiger Shark attacks soon after Llyron is presented. But more time seems to pass for Namor and the people at Hydropolis (Namor says his clash with Diane happened "the other day"). I don't think there's room for that much passage of time, but Namor annual #4 needs to take place between this issue and issue #55 (see the Considerations there). So i guess it took Seth longer to get an audience with the Senate than it seems, and Tiger Shark and Tamara Rahn do have to eat an entire octopus before launching their attack.

Comments

Two things. First, although you've said that Llyra had her son kill Vyrra, the image you posted shows that it was Llyra herself snapping the neck of the Dorma clone.

Second, a year after this issue was published, in the second story in Fantastic Four Unlimited #11, Llyra will tell Namor that Llyron actually has a copy of Vyrra's mind in him. So, Llyron is also Vyrra. However, I'm not sure if Llyron ever actually admitted that Lyra's suspicions were correct.

Updated the bit about who killed Vyrra, thanks Don.

Note that next issue has to take place after New Warriors 57, since the Warriors contact Namor through Phoebe- Namor is forced to flee while Phoebe is present in Namor 57, then issues 58-62 start the storyline that leads into Atlantis Attacks, then Namor's with the FF.
