New Mutants #4

Issue(s): New Mutants #4
Cover Date: Jun 83
Title: "Who's scaring Stevie?"
Credits:
Chris Claremont - Writer
Sal Buscema - Penciler
Bob McLeod - Inker
Louise Simonson - Editor

Review/plot:
Someone's been harassing Stevie Hunter with lewd phone calls.

The New Mutants investigate and it turns out to be one of her students.

His parents are abusive and his outlet is to harass Stevie.

He's taken away to a hospital with the hope that he'll be put in a foster home.

A little heavy on "message".

On a lighter note, Sunspot makes his first Magnum PI reference when he suggests that Stevie walk into a room full of people, one of which is the caller, in order to flush him out, since that worked in last week's Magnum.

A little bit of downtime fun in the beginning, too.

There's one bit in the story which didn't make much sense to me when I first read it. The New Mutants find the phone booth where Stevie's last harassing call was made, and Rahne goes half-wolf to get the caller's scent...but then she lurches out of the booth gagging, and says something like "Yech! How could anybody be so DISGUSTING?" So, did the guy masturbate in the booth? Did he blow out an enormous fart? Or maybe he had really bad body odor? This was never explained.

Around this time, John Buscema was announced as an upcoming guest artist.

Given the sliding timescale, I wonder what show Roberto would be obsessed by now? Any guesses? I'd be really amused if it was Gotham, but somehow I would think it would have to be an ABC show.

Roberto's all about the moustache, so the last season of Mad Men would have him all over John Slattery; Samuel Jackson as Fury...you'd think he'd be a MacGyver fan by now.

Anyone notice how good Our Pal Sal looks inked by Bob McLeod? It's almost seamless from the first three issues.
