Review/plot:
The (expanded) New Warriors have become celebrities after defeating the Sphinx, and both the Mad Thinker and Night Thrasher think that things have gotten out of hand.

But this issue is mostly downtime.

But even in those scenes, the Mad Thinker's Primus is spying on them. Creeper!

But the Thinker doesn't have anything sinister planned. He just has advice for the group.

It's an interesting (but not new) role for the Thinker to act as a kind of mentor who seems genuine but whose motives are inherently suspicious based on who he is. I liked the acknowledgement that he has been a less nuanced villain in other titles in between his New Warriors appearances.

After the talk, Night Thrasher declares that the core New Warriors as we know them (the original six plus Rage) will remain the main group. But instead of dismissing the rest, he says that they are part of the Warriors' extended family.

The book is so cluttered with characters (exactly what Thrasher was worried about) that the message of the issue feels a little chaotic. But it's a decent post-adventure downtime/regrouping issue.

Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: This takes place two weeks after the end of the last story.

References:

  • Cloak and Dagger break up their partnership, and make a reference to their origin from Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #64 while doing so.
  • Night Thrasher complains that Silhouette is dating Bandit despite him kidnapping her and trying to kill him in Night Thrasher #7-8.
  • Mad Thinker says that it's been "eighteen months" since he last saw the New Warriors, in New Warriors #3.

Comments

I think the Mad Thinker was referring to his encounter with the New Warriors in New Warriors 2, not New Warriors 36- in New Warriors 36, he was in the same prison as Vance but might not have even realized it.

Rage: "Even though I look like this, I'm only fourteen!" He said while drawn in a style that makes him look a lot younger than when he was with the Avengers.

@Michael - yeah, that makes more sense. Thanks.
