Nova #5

Issue(s): Nova #5
Cover Date: Jan 77
Title: "Evil is the... Earth-Shaker!"
Credits:
Marv Wolfman - Writer
Sal Buscema - Penciler
Tom Palmer - Inker

Review/plot:
While making a bid to be the subject of the next Marvel comic...

...Nova stops an invasion from Tyrannus and a giant Earth-Shaker robot.

The Tyrannus appearing in this issue is actually just a shape-shifted Moloid with delusions of grandeur. The real story will be told in Hulk #241

Quality Rating: C-

Historical Significance Rating: 2

Chronological Placement Considerations: N/A

References:

  • Tyrannus last appeared in Fantastic Four #128, where he seemingly died. He doesn't give a really good explanation of how he survived (which will be covered in the next real appearance of the Tyrannus) .
  • Nova's visit to the office of Marvel comics gets a reference to the previous bullpen appearance in Fantastic Four #176.
  • While Nova's at Marvel, Marv Wolfman gets a phone call from a Harold H. Harold, who gives Wolfman the plot for the next Tomb of Dracula. There's a reference to "this month's issue of Drac's book". That would be Tomb of Dracula #52 but that doesn't necessarily have to be the issue Harold and Wolfman are talking about.

Comments

Kind of funny that Nova compares the Earth-Shaker to Raideen (aka Raydeen), two full years before the character appeared in Marvel's SHOGUN WARRIORS. One of his other comparisons, Megalon, is much more accurate, but they were too numerous and, in many cases, quite a stretch. Mighty Joe Young, for Heaven's sake?
