Review/plot:
Actually, this issue should be Falcon & Iron Fist. Other than a brief scene of Luke Cage returning to New York, this story focuses on Fist's visit to Project Pegasus to see Bobby Wright, the boy who can transform himself into Captain Hero but is dying of cancer. He's helped through Pegasus' security by the Falcon. When they get into the facility, they discover that there's been strange goings-on...

....and they help the Guardsman investigate (the Guardsman says that his suit gives him the equivalent of Iron Man's power, but surely he's exaggerating).

Minor villain Solarr is killed in this story.

The strange happenings turn out to be the work of the evil elf guy named Bres that we met in the Return of the Black Knight storyline in Avengers #225-226.

I didn't realize we'd be seeing him again. This is his last appearance, though.

Bres had been manipulating Bobby, claiming that he'd help find Bobby's mom.

But Bobby is unable to hurt Iron Fist and he turns on Bres in the end.

It's a bit difficult reading this story knowing that Bobby will be retconned into the Super-Skrull. It requires a whole separate layer in order to "explain" why Bobby might be so easily manipulated by Bres and why he's unable to attack Iron Fist. It ruins the original intent of this story, which is otherwise a good one, and a good rule for a retcon is that you should never screw with the original intention of a good story. But that's a diatribe for a later time, i guess. For now, the Jim Owsley run of Power Man & Iron Fist continues to be a good combination of nice character moments and interesting story twists.

Quality Rating: B

Historical Significance Rating: 2 - death of Solarr

Chronological Placement Considerations: Power Man is just returning to New York during this issue after the events of #112, so he shouldn't appear in any other books between this issue and last. There's a little more leeway for Iron Fist and the Falcon, but unless there's a reason not to, we might as well do the same for them (thus placing both issues after Captain America #301).

References:

  • The Guardsman says that the Falcon was "once head of the SHIELD splinter group that later grew into Project Pegasus". That was in Captain America #218, although i still don't see a clear line between a group of super-heroes that SHIELD was training and a facility designed to study energy sources and imprison super-villains, other than the fact that Quasar was in the Super-Agents before becoming head of security at Pegasus.
  • Bobby Wright/Captain Hero was introduced in Power Man & Iron Fist #111.
  • Bres first appeared in Avengers #225-226.

Comments

I recently was reading a website with a summary of Namor 25. In it, it was explained that the Skull BELIEVED he was Bobby, due to Khan's magics.
(BTW, is your website working right? I got an error message when I tried to include a link to the website.)

Here's the link to the summary Michael was referring to:

FNORD - this is the same "problem" with Alicia being retconned into "Lyja Laserfist". It is obvious with her that it was not thought about until after the fact. Therefore, she acted just as Alicia would.

BTW - here's a new link to that issue.

The old one doesn't go to the issue in question.
