Power Man & Iron Fist #65

Issue(s): Power Man & Iron Fist #65
Cover Date: Oct 80
Title: "An eagle in the aerie"
Credits:
Mary Jo Duffy - Writer
Kerry Gammill - Penciler
Ricardo Villamonte - Inker

Review/plot:
El Aguila infiltrates Jeryne Hogarth's Canadian headquarters under the false assumption that Power Man & Iron Fist are criminals.

Jeryn apparently has an all female staff, and it turns out half of them are corrupt. They use Aguila's attack to launch their own offensive, but Fist convinces Aguila that he's wrong, and they're able to team up and arrest all of the rebels.

We don't find out who they're working for.

There's a funny scene where Cage walks into a clothing store to pick up his supply of silk yellow shirts. The next customer in line is Bruce Banner, waiting to pick up his supply of purple pants.

Another funny, if topical, scene is when Luke Cage gets mad at one of the female attackers and says "Mama, you just ratified the E.R.A.!"

Cameo by the Sons of the Tiger, including Lotus, who are all helping Danny train prior to Danny and Luke heading to Canada.

I feel like Mary Jo Duffy might have had a better run on this book if she had a better artist. The art isn't bad, it's just... plain. Although i guess no one forced her to use El Aguila.

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: This has to go after Hulk #254 to accommodate the Bruce Banner gag. The assumption is that Banner is getting a new set of clothes to go on the cruise on Kyle Richmond's vote in Defenders #88. Jennie Royce and Jeryn Hogarth have been hiding at Jeryn's Canadian HQ since the death threats from Senior Muerte & Suerte from last issue.

References:

  • El Aguila's life was saved by Power Man & Iron Fist in Power Man & Iron Fist #58, but he apparently got the wrong idea when he saw them walk into Seniors Muerte & Suerte's lair last issue.

Comments

Bob Layton's 2-issue stint was later announced as rescheduled for #64-65, but it doesn't appear to have happened at all.
