Power Pack #21

Issue(s): Power Pack #21
Cover Date: Apr 86
Title: " The great Goo-Gam treasure hunt!"
Credits:
Terry Austin - Writer
Brent Anderson - Penciler
Terry Austin - Inker
Carl Potts - Editor

Review/plot:
The first issue of Power Pack to not be written by Louise Simonson is a sweet little story by Terry Austin, who also inks (Austin was also one of three inkers on issue #19 but otherwise hasn't been on this book before).

We saw last issue that Katie Power is into something called the Googams and we learn this issue that it's a cartoon show based on a series of children's books written by author Jessie Wilcox Jones. And with their mother still in the hospital (but now stable and improving), the Power family's father gives the kids money to take Katie to a book signing by Jones.

As part of the promo for the book, there is a $100,000 treasure hunt contest, and Jones is kidnapped by three thugs (who are based on the Three Stooges) who want to make her tell them where to find the money. It's up to Energizer and Mass Master to rescue her.

Terry Austin has a great handle on Jack...

...but we learn that part of the reason for his grumpiness is that Jones used to write a series called Cody Davis: Space Explorer but she had to give it up when the Googams became more popular.

Jones explains to us comics fans that we shouldn't feel bad when our fan favorite books get cancelled due to low sales.

Really a fun comic, and i wouldn't have minded if Terry Austin took over when Louise Simonson left the book. He does come back for a sequel to this story some years later.

Even though this is a fill-in, the subplot involving the Snarks continues.

Quality Rating: A

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Spider-Man has a cameo but it's context free unless you can find me a scene of him shopping for Brussels sprouts in another book.

Comments

Weirdly enough, Googam, Son of Goom, never shows up.

Well, to be fair, even if we actually found a comic where Spidey shops for Brussels sprouts, that would confirm that he does eat them all the time, therefore still making the scene context free.
