Review/plot:
My original assessment of the Early Tales back-ups that ran through Silver Sable & the Wild Pack issues #11-16 was "they are narrated from the perspective of modern day Silver Sable, so i don't have to cut them out and place them back in time. But nothing of interest happens in them - i mean we already know everything we need to know about Sable's past - so they're really not worth covering." And nothing's changed in my mind except that my completionist itch has gotten the better of me.

The back-ups begin with a young Silver Sable chasing Ivan Trekov, the former Nazi scientist, now working with Hydra, who (seemingly) killed Sable's father and stole his body.

The op does not go well.

"Several months" later, Silver Sable is training her Wild Pack with exacting precision to make up for the failure of her previous mission. She's also decided to expand the mission of her group beyond hunting down Nazi war criminals. And this is where she officially becomes Silver Sable.

In her team's first mission for hire, she is contracted by British intelligence to rescue two operatives from a secret Russian military prison. During the mission she's targeted by the Foreigner.

However, instead of killing her, he romances her.

There's very little of interest in these back-ups, even taking into account the limited number of pages. If you compare these to the similar back-ups in the early issues of Alpha Flight, for example, not only do you see that there's just much less content provided here, you also realize that there just isn't that much background worth delving into for these characters.

Quality Rating: D

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Next issue's back-up will jump ahead "months" and then another "three years" so i'm placing them in a separate entry.

Comments

You can tell Silver Sable's much more skilled than the rest of her team by her ability to rappel ass-first.
