Silver Surfer #25Issue(s): Silver Surfer #25 Review/plot: This issue gets the Surfer directly involved in the second Kree-Skrull War thanks to Skrull trickery. The Surfer comes across an armada of Badoon, who attack him without provocation. ![]() Seeing this, the Super-Skrull approaches him, seeking an alliance. ![]() He claims his and Empress S'Byll's branch of the Skrulls were trying to form an alliance with the Badoon, but the Badoon attacked them instead. The Skrulls now need the Silver Surfer's help to escape. There's a brief fight while the Surfer initially refuses to help... ![]() ...but he does ultimately agree to attack the Badoon. ![]() Nice of Englehart to hold back and let Ron Lim's art go untouched with words there. Looks great. We almost go the whole battle with the Badoon without actually seeing any of them, but there they are fleeing at the end of it. ![]() The problem for the Surfer is that the Skrulls held back on the fact that the Badoon were already allied with the Kree. So the Surfer has unwittingly broken his neutrality in the Kree-Skrull War. ![]() And that puts Zenn-La at risk as well. While the Silver Surfer is rushing back to his home planet, we cut away to the subplot that ruins this otherwise very cool space epic. I'm talking about Clumsy Foulup. ![]() ![]() The idea here is based on a questionable fact that Engelhart slipped into the series earlier, which is that the Skrulls are reptilian. So the mysterious cloaked stranger asks Clumsy who he thinks his boss, Reptyl, will ally himself with, and what that means for the non-reptilian Clumsy. Those of us who like space fantasy accept a lot of coincidences when it comes to convergent evolution across the universe, but the idea that a reptile on Earth is the same thing as a Skrull is the same thing as Reptyl is a weak connection to me. I never really thought of Skrulls as reptiles. And Reptyl is a small time space pirate; i don't know that he really needs to ally himself with either faction in the Kree-Skrull War. Most of all, Clumsy Foulup is a joke that has already gone on for too long. When Surfer gets back to Zenn-La, he finds the Kree already there, and Ronan the Accuser comes out to greet him. In addition to the Badoon incident, there's the fact that there was a skrull imposter of the Silver Surfer running around, and the fact that Shalla Bal was less than polite to Nenora when she came to visit recently. ![]() The Surfer does better against Ronan than during their previous fight. ![]() ![]() ![]() With Ronan defeated, the Surfer knows that he has to destroy the rest of the Kree fleet before any of them can get through to hurt Zenn-La, but the Skrull armada shows up to help him. It's still a battle that takes "hours" but they do manage to win. The Skrulls then land on Zenn-La. The Super-Skrull is the one Skrull that wasn't affected when the Skrulls lost their shape-changing powers (because of his status at the time), so the hope was that after the Surfer rescued him he'd be able to restore the ability to the rest of his people. And since it's the loss of that power that triggered the Kree to renew the Kree-Skrull War, getting their powers back might end the war. It turns out now, though, that the powers can only be distributed through the females of the species, so Empress S'Byll and Super-Skrull want the Silver Surfer to help them transfer the shape-changing power to S'Byll. Surfer agrees, and the transfer works, although S'Byll becomes an amorphous blob for the time being. ![]() ![]() She almost looks like she might take on a shape similar to the Kree's Supreme Intelligence. ![]() For now, though, they wipe out the remaining Kree in the area. I am somewhat surprised at the Surfer accepting help from the Skrulls, and helping them in turn, after they tricked him in a pretty major way. But he does need help in protecting Zenn-La and as i said, helping them get their shape-shifting powers back can potentially end the war. So it makes sense. It's a good return to Englehart's final Surfer epic. Quality Rating: B Chronological Placement Considerations: It will be "days" before the start of next issue when the Kree renew their attack on Zenn-La. References:
