Silver Surfer #7

Issue(s): Silver Surfer #7
Cover Date: Aug 69
Title: "The heir of Frankenstein!"
Credits:
Stan Lee - Writer
John Buscema - Penciler
Sal Buscema - Inker

Review/plot:
A descendant of Dr. Frankenstein dupes the Silver Surfer into helping him (even though the Surfer is very distrustful at first). A duplicate Silver Surfer is created, but the real Surfer defeats him because unlike an evil creature he is able to sacrifice his life to save humanity.

The Surfer gets all weepy.

A silly story.

Just for fun: That's no ordinary rabbit!

The back-up feature is a Tales of the Watcher featuring an ugly but altruistic person who finds happiness when he volunteers to go to the center of the earth, where everyone is blind.

Quality Rating: C

Historical Significance Rating: 2 - Early Silver Surfer story

Chronological Placement Considerations: The duplicate Silver Surfer shows up again (once), so he gets a listing.

The Frankensurfer does indeed show up again in Roy Thomas's early '90s Dr. Strange run. The Frankenrabbit alsonreturns, in the late '70s, to menace President Carter.

Regarding the rabbit, i thought Walter was maybe referring to some Howard the Duck story i haven't read, but it was actually a real life incident.

Poor Jimmuh. His Presidency never really did recover from the "killer rabbit" story. I remember Dave Barry put it in "Dave Barry Slept Here", his humorous history of the U.S. with a "We are not making this up" disclaimer.

Frankenrabbit should totally have teamed up with the evil deer from the Headmen Saga in Defenders.

Not much of a history in that incident. But it did teach me that the craving for any excuse to disrespect Democrat Presidents is more ancient than I thought.

Walter Lawson points out the (sadly) true story about Carter and his rabbit. But really, all I could think was that this rabbit ended up in a time warp and went back to attack Arthur and his men.

Somehow seeing the creator of the killer rabbit (and Frankensurfer) just makes me think of that line from "Young Frankenstein" by the villagers about how many descendants of Victor there are and how mad they all tend to be. (as we see here and in the Frankenstein books)

I didn't know Monty Python read Marvel Comics. I guess that's where the killer rabbit gag came from. :P
