Strange Tales #128 (Dr. Strange)

Issue(s): Strange Tales #128 (Dr. Strange story only)
Cover Date: Jan 65
Title: "The dilemma of... the Demon's disciple!"
Credits:
Stan Lee - Writer
Steve Ditko - Penciler
Steve Ditko - Inker

Review/plot: A former disciple of a sorcerer called The Demon...

...shows up at Dr. Strange's house, begging for help. The disciple didn't believe in magic and joined him as a gag but now realizes what he's gotten himself into. The disciple is then teleported back to the Demon, leaving only his clothes behind. Dr. Strange animates the clothes and has them retrace their steps back to the Demon's dwelling.

After a cool mystic battle...

...Strange defeats the Demon.

The Demon will appear again, as a lackey of Baron Mordo. To distinguish him from other 'Demons', he is eventually given the name 'Demonicus'.

Comments

There was also a Dr. Demonicus who appeared in early issues of Godzilla, and reappeared in later issues of Shogun Warriors.

It's not Claremont, but there's a "with no quarter asked--or given!" during the fight. It makes me wonder how far back that goes.

The expression "no quarter shall be given" goes back at least to 1644. I'm not sure when writers started using the whole "no quarter asked or given" phrase.

Thanks, Michael. I did some Google searches of Project Gutenberg and found a lot of instances of the expression (in varying forms) from the first couple of decades of the 20th century, and a few from the second half of the 19th century. But it could easily go back further.

Dr. Demonicus also fought Iron Man and the West Coast Avengers.

I really like this Doctor Strange comic. It's the first time DS actually feels really powerful. The fight scene where he schools The Demon was so much fun.
