Strange Tales #145 (Dr. Strange)

Issue(s): Strange Tales #145 (Dr. Strange story only)
Cover Date: Jun 66
Title: "To catch a magician!"
Credits:
Denny O'Neil - Writer
Steve Ditko - Penciler
Steve Ditko - Inker

Review/plot:
After two issues scripted by Roy Thomas, with Steve Ditko getting plotting credits, Denny O'Neil takes over as writer.

It's a fairly simple story. Dr. Strange defeats a mystic named Mr. Rasputin.

After the big epic Mordo/Dormammu story arc, this single issue magician fight feels a bit small potatoes. Still fun, though.

Quality Rating: C-

Historical Significance Rating: 4 - Very early Denny O'Neil story for Marvel.

Chronological Placement Considerations: N/A

References:

  • Strange initially considers that the magicks created by Mr. Rasputin are actually the work of Baron Mordo, who potentially escaped his banishment by Dormammu in Strange Tales #141. It turns out to not be the case, of course.

Crossover: N/A

Continuity Insert? N

When Starlin was getting his start on Iron Man, he had an evil wizard named Mr. Rasputin and I've always wondered if it was supposed to be the same guy as here.

One bit I like here is that Rasputin, losing a magical duel with Strange, pulls out a plain old gun and shoots him.

It's a nice way to show both the limits of Strange;'s power and ground the story in a kind of reality.
