Sub-Mariner Comics #42

Issue(s): Sub-Mariner Comics #42
Cover Date: Oct 55
Title: "When the light goes out"
Credits:
Bill Everett - Writer
Bill Everett - Penciler
Bill Everett - Inker

Review/plot:
Namor tries to help a boat that seems to be in danger due to a light house light being out, but it turns out that the boat is a prison ship and some cohorts of one of the prisoners are deliberately sinking the boat to rescue him.

This story was reprinted in 1971's Sub-Mariner #45 (with no info on where the book was from; it just said "A Fabulous 50's Featurette!")...

...and the plot has basic similarities to part of the story from Sub-Mariner #43, where Namor helps a light house keeper, and i imagine that is why it was chosen as the reprint story. It also happens to be the final story in Namor's original Golden Age series. Other than those two things, it isn't a significant story but it's good as an example of Everett's mid-50s work.

Comments

Devil's Island as a prison is a weird anachronism- Devil's Island was closed in 1953.
