Issue(s): Tales Of Suspense #59 (Captain America story only)
Cover Date: Nov 64
Title: "Captain America"
Credits:
Stan Lee - Writer
Jack Kirby - Penciler
Chic Stone - Inker

Review/plot:
This issue is the beginning of Captain America's run of solo adventures in Tales Of Suspense. It also introduces the Avengers' butler, Jarvis.

Poor Cap is hanging around the Avenger's mansion in full costume with nothing to do. Looking through his scrapbook just depresses him.

Meanwhile a mob boss - Bull - decides to attack the Avengers - not sure exactly why. Bull figures that since Captain America has no powers, he is the weakest link. So they kidnap Jarvis and make him tell them who is on duty, and when they find out it is Cap, they attack. They are a fairly effective mob, with a bunch of individual fighting abilities. One guy wears a big old suit of armor, which is both silly and cool.

Cap still manages to beat the crap out of them.

Quality Rating: C-

Historical Significance Rating: 6 - first Captain America story in Tales Of Suspense. First appearance of the Avengers' butler, Edwin Jarvis.

Chronological Placement Considerations: The Iron Man portion of this issue takes place during Avengers #9. This Cap portion takes place slightly prior.

Comments

i imagine Jarvis sounding British and uppity when he tells Bull he could have just phoned to find out which Avenger was on duty that night.

whilst fighting Bull's "Karate Team" (and why, exactly, doesn't every super villain group have one?), cap says "Who taught you amateurs your karate...Millie the model?". that's just uncalled for. i bet Millie's karate is superb. and she looks great doing it!

In Journey Into Mystery #61, there is a butler named Jarvis, altough he looked younger than Edwin. They probably aren“t the same character, but i thought it was worth mentioning...
