Tales Of Suspense #84 (Captain America)

Issue(s): Tales Of Suspense #84 (Captain America story only)
Cover Date: Dec 66
Title: "The Super-Adaptoid!"
Credits:
Stan Lee - Writer
Jack Kirby - Penciler
Frank Giacoia - Inker

Review/plot:
Cap shows the Adaptoid to the Avengers...

...which allows it to absorb their powers (their "powers" include Hawkeye's bow).

It then spends the entire issue knocking Cap around. The Adaptoid gets no signal from AIM after he defeats Cap, which makes it worry that it may have outlived its usefulness now that it has defeated Cap, so it decides to abandon AIM.

Quality Rating: C-

Historical Significance Rating: 5 - the Adaptoid becomes "Super"

Chronological Placement Considerations: The Wasp and Goliath are back in the Avengers. Hawkeye is seeing the Black Widow again. Captain America says that SHIELD has destroyed AIM. The MCP places this between Avengers #33-34 and before Amazing Spider-Man annual #3.

References:

  • Hawkeye notes the similarities between the Adaptoid and the Space Phantom, who the Avengers fought in Avengers #2.

Crossover: N/A

Continuity Insert? N

The Super Adaptoid always reminded me of DC's Amazo but with more pathos.

If the Mimic met the Super-Adaptoid, would they both become Super-Mimic-Adaptoids? Confession: This seems goofy to me now but as a kid I loved these characters!

ISTR that Mimic DID meet the Super Adaptoid - and their powers nullified each other, or something like that.

After posting that comment yesterday, I stumbled onto a story where they did meet, here: http://www.supermegamonkey.net/chronocomic/entries/uncanny_x-men_29.shtml

I had seen it before, but I guess I found it pretty forgettable, ah whell
