Review/plot:
After dropping off Warlock last chapter, Pip teleported away. In this chapter he gets the rest of the Infinity Watch, thinking he'll bring them in to help Warlock. But by the time they get there, Warlock is gone, and they end up fighting Thor on their own. This turns out to be a screw up on multiple levels. Not only do they get stomped...

...but when Moondragon attempts to exorcise Thor's Valkyrie delusion using her Mind Gem-enhanced mental abilities, she winds up making her real.

And Drax loses his Power Gem, and Thor claims it.

So yeah, whoops.

We're at the point, by the way, where art by M.C. Wyman is the good part of a crossover.

Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: This is part five of Blood and Thunder. Part six is in Silver Surfer #87.

References:

  • The Infinity Watch are at first not sure if they believe Pip about Thor. But Drax wanted a rematch with Thor because Thor hit him "on purpose". He's presumably talking about their fight in Infinity Crusade #5 (and the related tie-ins).
  • Warlock prevented the Silver Surfer from getting hurt by Thor in Warlock and the Infinity Watch #23

Crossover: Blood and Thunder

Comments

I've always been a fan of M.C. Wyman's penciling. He has a style that to me is somewhat reminiscent of John Romita and John Buscema. His work was another breath of fresh air in the 1990s.

Interesting how different art can be interpreted. I don't know Wyman and haven't seen anything else by him but this art looks more along the line of early Image artists and not Romita.
And it's the same with the rest of the crossover artists. Smith looks like Sears and Grindberg like early Mignola (but not coming near). Better artists or at least more original ones could have helped the mediocre plot by giving us some nice to look at slugfests.

After having read the comments about the rest of the event and seing the scans I just remembered who Wyman reminded me of (especially in Thor #471) when I read those issues and it's Andy Kubert.
