Warlock and the Infinity Watch #22

Issue(s): Warlock and the Infinity Watch #22
Cover Date: Nov 93
Title: "Siege!"
Credits:
Jim Starlin - Writer
Angel Medina - Penciler
Bob Almond - Inker
Lynaire Brust - Assistant Editor
Craig Anderson - Editor

Review/plot:
This is probably my favorite Infinity Crusade tie-in, but that's because it's only a technicality that it's a tie-in. It's really a Mole Man solo story, with Mole Man defending Monster Island from the UN forces that Gamora stopped last time.

It also becomes clear that the Senator Munson from last time is not what he appears to be.

The issue ends with the most gruesome depiction of the exploding suns, making it much more clear what the implications are than most other books.

The Mole Man's confrontation is fun. The Moleoids in the army uniforms are adorable. To me, this issue is proof that the weight of the Infinity crossovers was holding Starlin down. This book can be a lot of fun when it's just trying to justify its existence as a tie-in. As i've said before, i wish that Starlin could have just done mini versions of the Infinity stories in this book. I suspect that without all the bloat, they could have been a lot better.

Chronological Placement Considerations: This takes place while Adam Warlock is confronting the Goddess' psyche, as seen in Warlock Chronicles #5...

...and it ends with the nova blast from the end of Infinity Crusade #5.

Comments

I was expecting a monster, but that's still a hell of a monster.

Stories where the Mole Man is actually effective are always a heap of fun. If I ever come back to read the early cosmic stories I'll have to make sure I don't skip this particular issue.
