X-Factor annual #6 (Mystique)

Issue(s): X-Factor annual #6 (Mystique story only)
Cover Date: 1991
Title: "Tribute the third"
Credits:
Peter David - Writer
Guang Yap - Penciler
Josef Rubinstein - Inker
Suzanne Gaffney - Assistant Editor
Bob Harras - Editor

Review/plot:
This is the third "Tribute" story that Peter David has written for an X-Annual back-up. This one features Mystique.

The story shows her on a cruise ship, mourning the death of Destiny (from the same Uncanny X-Men #254-255 mentioned above). The idea is that Destiny once took Mystique on a cruise on the same ship, and tried to get Mystique to lighten up, but couldn't. Destiny then predicted that one day Mystique would return to this ship after Destiny died.

And the bittersweet punchline is that, in the end, Destiny does get Mystique to laugh, as predicted.

I guess i'm a sap for this kind of thing, because the ending really got me.

Quality Rating: B

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: This can't take place while Mystique is posing as Valerie Cooper, from Uncanny X-Men #266 to Uncanny X-Men #280/X-Factor #70.

It could really take place at any other time after Uncanny X-Men #254-255, but i've placed it circa Avengers #312 when Mystique is said to be away dealing with Destiny's death.

Wonder if theCoehn Brothers saw this issue before penning the Dude's farewell to Donnie?

Possibly my favorite (self-contained) X-Men story. A really beautiful, funny, sad, short story.

A scene where someone pours the ashes of a friend to the water, then has the wind blow them back to their face, also happens in Mel Brooks' "Life Stinks", which is from 1991 too. I'm not sure whether the movie came out before this issue was written, though. Maybe Peter David came up with the idea independently, or maybe him and Brooks both borrowed the gag from some earlier source? I've always thought the Coens lifted it from Brooks, though.

X-Factor Annual 6 came out on June 11th, 1991 while "Life Stinks" came out on July 26th 1991. Unless PAD had an advance copy of the script for Life Stinks or Brooks had an advance copy of the plot for this story, there doesn't seem to be a way that either man could have stolen the idea from the other.
