Review/plot:
The X-Men search for the Juggernaut, but he's really with Jean Grey trying to get a memory of Onslaught unblocked (in traditional Marvel comics style, by punching the block).

Meanwhile, Xavier gets increasingly weird. Cyclops finds that Xavier has a file on Franklin Richards up on the monitor (although i don't think it's that odd for Xavier to be keeping tabs on a very powerful young mutant, especially one who only recently reverted back to childhood after getting swapped with his future self).

Jean figures out who Onslaught is before Juggernaut, and then tries to get him to leave. But it's too late. Onslaught shows up and grabs Juggernaut's Cyttorak gem.

I want to point out that there was a time (c.f. Marvel Team-Up #150) when the Juggernaut didn't carry the gem around with him everywhere, so i guess it's lucky for Onslaught that he has it. But i do like the idea that Onslaught's plan involves getting the gem. Oh, and we finally get the reveal: Onslaught is Xavier.

Also in this issue, regular Beast continues to try and fail to escape captivity.

Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 2 - revelation that Professor X is Onslaught

Chronological Placement Considerations: Takes place directly after Uncanny X-Men #334. Continues directly in Onslaught: X-Men, but the same is true of Avengers #400.

References:

  • Several developments continue from Uncanny X-Men #334, including the Juggernaut's arrival and Cannonball sulking in a tree after getting chewed out by the Professor. We're also offered a No-Prize if we can figure out why Jean is wearing a completely different outfit compared to the scene in #334 that this continues directly from.
  • Jean takes Juggernaut to the psi-shielded room that Xavier hid in while he was faking his death to prepare for the Z'Nox invasion between Uncanny X-Men #42 and Uncanny X-Men #65.
  • Iceman makes a reference to the X-Men's first encounter with the Juggernaut in Uncanny X-Men #12, and Dark Beast slips up because he didn't realize that the X-Men spent most of the night prepping for the fight without having actually seen him.
  • Another Road To Onslaught style listing of recent events that have tipped Xavier over the edge: the failure to tame Sabretooth (Uncanny X-Men #328), Wolverine's degradation (Wolverine #100?), Xavier's wiping of Magneto's mind (X-Men #25), and the death of Dennis Hogan (X-Men Prime).
